With over 6,000 educators convened for the North American Division of Seventh-day Adventists Teachers’ Convention, it was standing room only for the Growing Young Adventists breakout session led by Ken Rogers and Steve Case.
Steve offered, “Ken gave a great presentation on ‘Unlocking Keychain Leadership’ with personal stories and suggestions for educators in addition to churches. He also had about 15 copies of Growing Young prominently displayed in front and gave out tickets for a drawing at the end. He told those in attendance that he didn’t want to hand out a book to anyone just because their ticket was drawn. He wanted those selected to promise to read the book and start a book club. He pressed it home!”
Ken shared, “It went great! Nearly 150 people came, and #GYA was well recieved, great exchanges and active participation.”
After Ken’s introduction, he handed it over to Steve, who quickly named the remaining five core commitments with a very brief explanation and then transitioned to the dynamic between SDA schools and SDA churches.
“We went into some activity based stuff, specifically in pairs doing thumb wars, followed by the human spring (leaning into each other and catching hands, then moving farther apart and trying it again),” detailed Steve. “This was to consider how schools and churches relate to each other. After some sharing in pairs, I gave some content and then shifted to ‘creating culture change’ in churches and school.”
“Participants were pleased that this was not another program being put on them, but rather a sustainable change on how we do life together, school, church, home, and community,” observed Ken. “Teachers want to partner in the culture change to grow young. We really had a great workshop and it was fun to partner with Steve.”
